Siri, the personal voice assistant available on the iPhone 4S has been all the rage these days. But if you didn't have a iPhone "4S", you were out of luck. Until recently, that is.
A new alternative to Siri is the SpeakTolt ( pronounced speak - to- it) Voice Assistant. It costs $1.99 at the Apple App store, but it will be available for free this Valentine's Day for the first 100,000 downloads.
The app is an alternative for Siri wannabees on the Android platform. Now, 3GS and iPhone 4 users can have voice commands with their smartphone too.
A striking difference between Siri and SpeakTolt is the way results of your voice commands are communicated back to you. For example, if you ask Siri what the weather looks like today. She will say something like "Here are your weather results", then show you the weather details on your smartphone screen. On the other hand, when you ask SpeakTolt what the weather is like today, you'll received a spoken answer similar to "It is 45 degrees outside".
There are other voice command phone apps that are alternatives to Siri, like Vlingo and Dragon Go, but SpeakTolt may just give Siri some run for its money. SpeakTolt has been receiving some pretty good reviews -- if only for its future potential -- from the likes of The Huffington Post, The New York Times, and Lifehacker.
Whichever voice command assistant you use, they all serve to make your phone more user-friendly and make using web services easier and more quick.
By the way, did you know that the name Siri was generated from the SRI International Artificial Intelligence Center?
